Mullion take Kernow Cup after nail biting finish

The Final of the 2025 Kernow Cup was held on a lovely sunny day at Falmouth Golf Club on Saturday 8th November.

The Kernow Cup is for any junior golfer who started the year with a handicap between 29 and 54 and was played between Tehidy Park and Mullion, with teams of 5 juniors playing individual matchplay.

In the first match, it was scratch game with both Ellie Richards from Tehidy Park and Toby Reynolds of Mullion playing off a course handicap of 24. It was Toby Reynolds who took control early in the match and carried on his good play to close out a 6 and 4 win for Mullion.

In the second match Tehidy's Lucas Lawrence was receiving 5 shots from Mullion's James Bristow. Lucas Lawrence got off to a flying start using his shots to good effect and finished off winning 3 and 2 to put a point on the board for Tehidy Park.

In the third match Sam O'Mahony from Tehidy also received 5 shots against Jenson Marlow of Mullion and again used the shots in the first few holes to gain an early lead and despite a comeback in the middle from Jenson Marlow, Sam O'Mahony took the game 3 and 1, making it Tehidy Park 2 - 1 Mullion at this stage.

In match 5, Tehidy's Elais Paine was receiving 2 shots from Mullion's Oliver Entwistle. It was the Mullion player who played some excellent golf and won 7 and 6 to tie the match up with one remaining game on the course.

In match 4, two eleven year olds in Tehidy Park's Charlie Hoon and Mullion's Nellie Hosking were the final game left on the course, with the Mullion player receiving 3 shots. After 10 holes, Nellie Hosking took a three hole lead, only for Charlie Hoon to play great golf over the next few holes to get back to all square after 15. After a shot from Nellie hit a tree on the 16th hole and it going backwards onto 14th fairway, it looked like the door might of opened for Charlie. However, with a gallery starting to appear by the 16th green, Nellie hit an unbelievable shot from 120 yards over the trees onto the green, 12 foot from the pin that was good enough to win the hole and again put her 1 Up with 2 to play.

The 17th hole was halved and the 18th hole is a Par 3 with spectators surrounding the balcony area of the clubhouse, it was all still to play for. Both players hit good tee shots just off the green and both hit nice chip shots close to the hole. Nellie two putted to secure her four. Charlie had a 12 foot putt to keep the match going but just missed his par putt and resulted in a one up win for Nellie Hosking and Mullion won the 2025 Kernow Cup by 3 matches to Tehidy Park's 2 matches.

Congratulations to everyone who took part, there was some excellent golf played, especially to the two juniors in the deciding match who had a large gallery for the final three holes and all golfers from both teams can be extremely proud of their play.

We would like to thank Falmouth Golf Club for hosting the event and to all of the parents and organisers who attended the final.
