The CGU Junior Maxam Cup competition took place over the Holywell Course at St Enodoc yesterday with a great total of 84 juniors taking part. And in the end the junior team from St Mellion claimed the top honours.
The competition - foursomes strokeplay team format - was this year sponsored very generously by Camel Glass and St Enodoc meaning an enhanced prize fund was on offer.
Come the end of a day which was predominantly dry but deteriorated into rain, St Mellion and 2024 winners St Enodoc were tied on their best two gross scores (131) but an unfortunate error meant the St Enodoc third and deciding score did not count. Nonetheless the St Mellion score was spearheaded by a great 62 from County Junior Champion Oban Webber partnered by Joab Atkins, which gave them the top pairs prize. To this was added a 69 from Owen Loton and Ethan Kinski. The two counting scores for St Enodoc came from gross pairs runners up Alfie Chapman and Will Dingle who totalled 65 to which brothers Sam and Oli Hanton added a 66. The third team spot was claimed by Launceston on 140 as Edward Walters and George Calaz combined for a 67 and Ryan Tozer and Oliver Uglow a 73.
The nett team competition was won by West Cornwall (121) with Trevose runners up (125) and Truro (127) third. For West Cornwall a sterling nett 57 from Joseph Kevern and late replacement Lucas Cattran earned them the top nett pair prize as team mates Luke Harrison and Charley Hackett added a nett 64. For Trevose the two Harrys - Gwinnell and Durnall - scored a nett 62 whilst Connor O'Hagan and Ollie Richards registered a 63. The Launceston pairing of Walters and Calaz took best nett runners up spot with their nett 59.

At the prize presentation George Tunbridge St Enodoc GC General Manager welcomed a packed clubhouse saying this was his favourite competition of the year witnessing so many juniors out playing and then dining and being present afterwards. CGU Secretary Chris Pountney thanked both St Enodoc GC and Geoff Jones, Camel Glass for their fantastic hospitality and support of the competition. He made special mention of how good it was to see a team from China Fleet entered, something the club had not been in a position to do for a number of years. Pountney wished the very best to a number of juniors for whom this was their last event and also praised the honesty of the St Enodoc team members who had made the error in scoring and highlighted it to the scorers - for this they should be complimented. In closing Pountney thanked the juniors and parents for their support, company and humour over many years, a time in which he had seen many of them of them grow from trolley handle height to blossom into golfers.

Also acknowledged during the presentation was Alfie Chapman (above) who has been selected for England Golf winter regional coaching. This is a great achievement and true reward for the hard work Alfie has put into his golf this year. He now joins Alex Simmons (Tehidy Park) and will be attending sessions across the winter period at Cumberwell Park GC, Wilts.
