The Mullion senior pairing of Mike Wigley and Dare Mason dominated the Lord Lieutenants Trophy competition from start to finish yesterday at St Austell GC

Out in the first group of starters in the betterball pairs competition their 47 point haul sat at the top of the leaderboard throughout as 49 pairs failed to match or overhaul their total.

Ex County Seniors team member Wigley delivered 5 pars and two birdies for the pairing but Mason in fine form registered 7 gross pars and a birdie to be the major contributor to the pairs score.

Perranporth father and son Mike & Alex Escott were runners up in the charity competition. supporting the Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust, with a 45 point score in which Escott jnr returned 7 pars and a birdie.

Third spot went to bothers Matthew & Josh Philpotts (St Mellion) with the latter ending his round with 5 consecutive birdies, something described by one of their playing partners as "just unbelievable"

With 9 of the competition pairs scoring 42 points or more in the competition - acceptable for handicap purposes - there are likely to have been a number of handicap adjustments over the midnight hour.

The Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust is the Cornwall Golf Union's chosen charity and the CGU, as President Martin Edwards explained, will once more make a significant donation to them with the entire proceeds of the competition heading their way.

Edwards welcomed those present at the prizegiving and thanked St Austell GC for its hospitality and, having played himself, the excellent condition of the course. This was echoed by Wigley who also thanked those who had played and the CGU staff for their staging of the event.  He said "Needless to say, we are delighted to have won and to win a CGU cup is always an honour and will be a memory going forward."
