Cornwall U18 Boys produced a great result away from home today, ending up 8.5 - 6.5 winners over Somerset in a Roy Greenaway League match.
Fundamental to the win were the five morning foursomes after which the Duchy team headed into lunch with a 4 -1 lead.
Needing 4 points from the ten afternoon singes matches it was a tense affair but in the end a 4.5 point haul was sufficient to see Cornwall claim the overall match honours.
[Team Manager Mark Wallwork reports]
Cornwall U18s claimed a well-earned victory over Somerset in a competitive and good-spirited match at Mendip Springs Golf Club, finishing with an overall score of 8.5–6.5. We would like to extend our thanks to the Cornwall Golf Union for organising the fixture and to Mendip Springs Golf Club for their warm welcome and excellent hospitality throughout the day.
Morning Foursomes
With brisk winds sweeping across the course, the Cornwall boys teed off with determination. The pairings were: Tiernan Wallwork & Fred Kirkland, Bobby Godfrey & Harry Jolliff, Alfie Chapman & Jack Jolliff, Heath Coombes & Oban Robinson and Charlie Emmett & Ryan Tozer
Early updates after five holes showed Cornwall in a strong position:
Tiernan & Fred – 3 Up, Bobby & Harry – 3 Up, Heath & Oban – 2 Up, Alfie & Jack – 2 Up and Charlie & Ryan – All Square
Moving round towards the back 9, Cornwall were looking strong but Somerset started to make a run by catching up on Tiernan & Fred and Heath & Oban by bringing them to all square. Unfortunately, Heath & Oban lost on the 17th 2/1. The other matches ebbed and flowed, but Cornwall held their nerve. A standout moment came on the 18th when Fred rolled in a superb 20-foot putt to secure a 1 Up win.
Foursomes results:
Tiernan & Fred – Won 1 Up, Bobby & Harry – Won 2&1, Heath & Oban – Lost 2&1, Alfie & Jack – Won 2&1 and Charlie & Ryan – Won 3&1
Morning score: Cornwall 4 – Somerset 1
Afternoon Singles
After a welcome lunch provided by Mendip Springs, the players returned to the course. The wind remained a factor, but the conditions stayed dry, setting the stage for a tense singles session.
Front nine updates: 5th hole – Ryan 3 Down, Harry 1 Up,
9th hole – Tiernan 2 Up, Heath 2 Down, Bobby 1 Down, Charlie 3 Up, Oban 3 Up, Alfie 1 Down
10th hole – Jack 1 Down
11th hole – Fred 3 Down
The boys fought hard across the back nine, with some matches going to the wire. Cornwall needed 4 points to win the day, and as the scores started to come in we had secured 2.5 points out of the first 7 singles matches. Tiernan and Harry both won their single matches and Bobby gave Cornwall half a point. Ryan unfortunately lost his match, leaving us with Oban and Charlie to battle for the remaining points. Charlie Emmett, on his debut for Cornwall, played steady both in the foursomes and the singles giving us another point in the afternoon by winning his match 3/2. The last match to come in was Oban Robinson who was sitting all square on the 16th tee and managed to bring it to 1up with 2 to play. Going down the 17th both boys hit wayward shots both left and right. Unfortunately for Somerset this was a lost ball and 3 was taken from the tee. Oban’s second shot was hit into the green, securing a 2/1 win for Oban and a overall win for Cornwall.
Singles results:
Tiernan – Won 2&1, Alfie – Lost 2&1, Heath – Lost 6&5, Bobby – Halved, Fred – Lost 5&4, Harry – Won 5&4, Jack – Lost 2 Down, Charlie – Won 3&2, Oban – Won 2&1 and Ryan – Lost 6&5
Singles score: Cornwall 4.5 – Somerset 5.5
Final Result:
Cornwall 8.5 – Somerset 6.5
The day concluded with sandwiches and refreshments kindly provided by Mendip Springs, followed by speeches from the team captains. All the Cornwall players displayed excellent sportsmanship and represented the county with pride.
