Cornwall Beaten at Home by Gloucestershire

Cornwall went down to a 10-5 - 4.5 defeat at home to Gloucestershire today in a Channel League match.

Trailing 3-2 at lunch after the morning five foursomes, the Duchy team could only take 2.5 points from the ten afternoon singles.

[County Captain Adam Bridgewater reports]

Cornwall took on English County Finalists Gloucester at Tehidy Park on Sunday expecting a difficult match against a strong side.

The Foursomes in the morning showed promise with hist club member and county junior youngster Tiernan Wallwork and Sam Crocker  (Carlyon Bay) winning 4&3 and Jamie Greet and Kyle Fraser (both Mullion) also victorious 3&1, but Gloucester fought back to lead 3-2 after the morning session.

In a race against the incoming coastal fog the format was changed in the afternoon and play in fours would be the order of the day in a bid to get the game finished.

Jamie Greet and Ollie James (Launceston) both went down the last, Greet looked like he was going to win but Ashley Millington holed a 20 foot putt for a half and James opponent Nathan Moore also holed a sizeable put to win his game.

Local member Alec Hinds and Joe Ibbs-George (Perranporth) both succumbed before Crocker won his second point of the day beating Mortimore 3&2.

Gloucester showed their strength in depth with wins for Andy Hale, Neil Tocknell, Stuart Hardy and Mike Day all by narrow margins.

This would leave Wallwork out on the course and he delivered his second point whilst showing that age is just a number, this capped a fine display by the youngster who surely has a wonderful county career ahead of him.

The final match score was 10.5- 4.5 in favour of Gloucestershire. The result did not reflect the closeness between the two sides.

Of course we would like to wish the best of luck to Gloucestershire when they represent the South West in the Men's English County Finals at St Enodoc in September.
