[County Vice Captain Alex Hinds reports]

The Channel League match between Gwent and Cornwall, held at, in Peter Allis’s words one of the “best 3 hidden gems in the UK”. With clear blue skies, bright sunshine and not a breath of wind to speak of, conditions were ideal for competitive golf if the players could manage the blistering heat.

A couple of late changes to the line meant Alfie Chapman returned following last week's match along with Vice Captain Alex Hinds taking a playing Captains role.

Morning Foursomes

The pairing of Tom Stephens and Mens team debutant in junior Tiernan Wallwork led Cornwall out of the blocks but succumbed to a 3&2 loss. The Mullion pairing of Jamie Greet and Kyle Fraser restored parity with a convincing 5&4 victory, while match 3, Chapman and Sam Crocker battled to a half. Hinds and County Championship runner up Max Gay enjoyed a close match and held a 1up lead playing the Par 3 18th after hitting the green off the tee, a 3 putt cost the pairing the point with the match ending a half. The final match pitted Ethan Tempest and Joe Ibbs-George who played some steady disciplined golf and also ended with a halved game.

So 3-2 in favour of the hosts at lunch.

Afternoon Singles

In the afternoon singles Cornwall required of 6 of the 10 points available to take victory. Greet got a valuable half for Cornwall in the first match. Fraser couldn’t continue his from the morning against Callum Hook, (Welsh international) and lost 4/3.  Gwent then begun to take control of the match with a couple of 3&2 victories against Tiernan and Alfie. Cornwall then bounced back with the next 3 matches Gay, Ibbs-George and Crocker, gaining valuable points, all by winning on the 18th. With the match in the balance the tail didn’t wag with Stephens tasting defeat on 16 quickly followed by Hinds suffering the same feat moments later. Tempest however, remained A/S through 16. The chance of winning one final point to take the last word vanished like the water from bottles all day and Ethan lost his match on the 18th.

Final Score: Gwent 9.5 - 5.5 Cornwall

Following the match Hinds praised the determination shown by his team. "Every match is important and most of all an experience not just for the players but myself also today".

"I’m proud to have Captained my first match before taking the role full time in a couple of years (but I may skip the playing part!)."

"I was impressed with how the players handled the conditions and heat, particularly in the current heatwave we are enduring."

"This group is developing with every match and alongside Captain Bridgewater’s plans to develop and integrate our Juniors it was great to have two playing today in Alfie Chapman and Tiernan Wallwork from Tehidy Park GC making his Men's debut."

"To witness how the other players in the team both this week and last, have welcomed and integrated them into the side, the future looks promising for them and the county”.
