After narrowly losing their first 2025 Channel League match away to Dorset, the Cornwall Men's team
secured a comfortable home win against Somerset at West Cornwall on Sunday
With two players making their debut in the Mne's team the 10.5 - 4.5 win over Somerset was a welcome one. And without prejudice to some of the more regular players in the team the day belonged to those debutants, 15 year old Alfie Chapman (St Enodoc) and the somewhat older host club member Ross Lawrance as playing together they secured a foursomes win on tough breezy conditions by 2 holes over 2024 SWCGA Champion Curtis Edwards and Tom Trowbridge. Not content with that both then registered singles wins - an emphatic 6&5 for Alfie over Tom Wring and a 2 up one for Ross over Wills House, this one with a great up and down from over the back of 18 - cemented with a 20 foot putt.
[County Captain Adam Bridgewater reports]
Cornwall played Somerset at a beautiful but cold and windy West Cornwall last weekend and Captain Adam Bridgewater continued his policy of blooding new talent with two more debutants gaining valuable experience at this elite level - local Ross Lawrence (West Cornwall) and 15 year old Alfie Chapman (St Enodoc) joined the bulk of the team that lost narrowly away against Dorset.
The five foursomes in the morning were to set up an outstanding performance from the Duchy. First Tom Stephens and Billy Downing (both Truro) played beautifully to secure a 4&3 victory.
Then the story really took shape as debutants Lawrence and Chapman paired together delivered another win 2 up. With maturity beyond his years Chapman secured his first senior men’s point, safely finding the fairway off the last tee, Lawrence found the putting surface and 'Chippie Jnr', as he has been now nicknamed, rolled the putt up to gimmie distance, much to the delight of all around the 18th green.
Kyle Fraser (Mullion) and Sam Crocker (Carlyon Bay) fought well for a half and Jamie Greet (Mullion) and George Law (Perranporth) did enough to win 2&1.
Somerset took the spoils in the final game with Ethan Tempest and Jack Kevern (both West Cornwall) losing 6&4 leaving the Duchy 3.5 - 1.5 in front at lunch.
In the afternoon Cornwall really played well and won 7 of the 10 singles matches, Winners were Greet, Stephens, Downing, and Law, who made an eagle two on the 18th (driving the green and holing a 20 footer) and Sam Crocker who was well under par in winning on the final hole!!
But it was to be the Lawrence and Chapman show as both won again, Lawrence on the last and young Chippie Jnr with a thumping 6&5 victory.
Two outstanding individual performances as well as a top team victory.
The team now move up country this weekend to play Gwent in Wales (Sunday 13th July) - Good luck One and All.
Update: owing to a withdrawal Alfie Chapman will now be in the Cornwall team for the match v Gwent on Sunday.
