Despite a late finish in the PGA Tour event in Detroit on Sunday, with yet another good finish, Harry Hall made his flight to the UK in time to travel to Burnham & Berrow GC and compete yesterday, only 36 hours later, in the R&A's Final Qualifying event for this year's Open Championship at Royal Portrush later this month. Without playing a practice round and only having a fleeting memory of a possible junior match years previous at the Somerset club Harry performed brilliantly as he registered two rounds of 4 under par 68 to finish in a tie for second place with just five spots available from this one of the four final qualifying venues.
Joining Harry at the Open will be South Africa's Justin Walters who topped the Burnham scores at -9, Denmark's Jacob Skov Olesen, and Englishmen OJ Farrell and Frazer Jones.
Harry's playing group included LIV Golf's Anirban Lahiri and Somerset County player and Burnham member Freddie Turnell. In breezy conditions the group attracted the largest gallery in both morning and afternoon sessions with spectators able to walk the fairways and get up close to greenside action. The gallery included local Cornish support in the form of a number of West Cornwall Golf Club members and a number of Cornwall county players and officials.
Harry Hall paid tribute to the local knowledge of his West Cornwall clubmate and caddie Matt Richards after finishing up on -8 at Burnham & Berrow.
“I’ve done it (Final Qualifying) in the past at Royal Cinque Ports and it helped to have the fans here today, less of a drive, having a local caddie, Matt Richards, who is from West Cornwall and played a lot of county golf here," he said. "I hadn’t seen the golf course until today, I might have played an U16 county match here a long time ago, Matt guided me around really well, I’m super happy."
Harry was backed by a strong contingent of friends and family and added: "Anyone that's come up from Cornwall, I'll buy them a drink now." And he did!
Before teeing it up in Ireland Harry will be playing in the Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club from 10th - 13th July.
One and All wish him the very best for both tournaments and the rest of the season.
