Trethorne were the toast of Mullion in the CGU Over 55s Team Championship competition held over the Lizard links earlier this week.
In the traditionally low scoring handicap betterball medal competition with 26 club teams of 6 (3 pairs) with all pairs to count, Trethorne accumulated a 25 under par aggregate total of 182 as Andrew Hardy & Gary Marquand combined for a nett 59, to which Andrew Wilson & Mike Davey added a nett 61 whilst Simon Schofield & Andrew Dance returned a 62.
Second spot in the team event went the way of West Cornwall who finished 6 shots back on a total of 118. Their scores came from Dennis Fryer & Anthony Dickinson (64), Fred Grist & Tom Gair (63) and Chris Maw & Nick Watters (61). Two shots further back on 190 were The Point at Polzeath as Stephen Lawes & Trevor Atkinson combined for 64, with a 65 from Tony Hogan & Tony Banfield, to which Steve Elliott & John Whitfield added a 61. All 6 team members in the first three spots will either have received vouchers on the day or will receive them shortly. Full team results can be found below.
As an individual pair Hardy & Marquands 59 led for a considerable period but in the end Mawgan Porth's Simon Tonkin & Johnny Bennett popped them with a nett 58 to take the best pairs prize. Third best pair on countback were Falmouth's Dave Holland & Nick Chinn on 61 - a score recorded by 5 other pairs. All of the first three pairings will receive vouchers. Full individual results can be found below.
Mullion Club Captain Mark Greet welcomed competitors to the club and hoped they had all enjoyed their rounds. Greet and former CGU President Glyn Rowett presented vouchers to the prizewinners who were present. It was fitting that Rowett, the original donorTof the trophy was then able to present it to Trethorne.
Thanks were expressed to Mullion GC as every part of the day went well thanks to the efforts put in by the club staff. The Mullion course received lots of plaudits for its condition – a tribute to what Gordon Tamblyn and his small team are able to deliver.
