Truro Capture Maxam Cup 2025

2025 Maxam Cup Winners Truro
(L to R: Billy Downing, George Champion, Jared Mortimore, Andy Watson (Truro Captain),
Matt Chadwick (St Austell Captain), Alec Penrose, Tom Stephens and Paul Suddes)

Truro are the 2025 Maxam Cup Champions after their 6-man team all contributed to the overall team score in the

36-hole foursomes stroke play competition held at St Austell GC yesterday.

With the best two morning scores added to the best two afternoon did not get off to the best start. County team players Billy Downing and Tom Stephens as lead pair were disappointed with a round one 80 to which fellow county players Jared Mortimore and George Champion added a 74 giving them a halfway total of 154.

At that halfway point the lead (147) sat with West Cornwall as their total came from Matt Richards & Jordan Musitano (72) and Jack Kevern & Rob Lewis (75). Also, very much in the equation were Carlyon Bay (148) as Sam Crocker & Josh Small (73) joined Martin Quantick & Alec Nile (75).

It all changed in the afternoon though as Downing & Stephens surged to a best of the day 2 under par 67.  Suddes & Penrose then delivered the telling blow with a 72 giving Truro an overall total of 293.

West Cornwall fell away slightly. Kevern & Lewis recorded a 73 and Richards & Musitano a 76 to see their team finish on 296  whilst Trevose finished third on 300.

Best combined pair Jason Friend (L),with Matt Chadwick and David Sleat

Whilst Downing & Stephens had the best round of the day, their combined total of 147 saw them pipped to the day’s best combined pair by China Fleet’s David Sleat and Jason Friend who excelled over 36 holes with a morning 71 and an afternoon 73 (144). Joint third were the West Cornwall pairings of Kevern & Lewis and Richards & Musitano (148) whilst there were three pairs on 150 - Tom Carter & Matt Piper (St Mellion), Steve Chapman & George Tunbridge (St Enodoc) and brothers Tom & Josh Chapman (Tehidy Park).

CGU Championship Chairman Simon Harper thanked St Austell GC for hosting the competition whilst Club Captain Matt Chadwick welcomed a packed clubhouse to the day. He too thanked the club staff for looking after the 96-man field so well and paid tribute to the hard work of the green staff in presenting a course in such a good playing condition allowing for the early year rainfall and then the extended dry spring period. Harper and Chadwick presented prizes before handing the Maxam Cup to Truro Captain Andy Watson. He too praised the condition of the course and urged those present to understand how difficult it has been for greenkeepers on parklands to present their courses. He was delighted with his team who he described as ‘absolute class’ and a group whom he was sure would claim further silverware.
