[County Captain Adam Bridgewater reports]
Cornwall made the long trip to a beautifully presented Ferndown to play unbeaten Dorset last weekend in their first Channel League game of the season.
Matt Richards (West Cornwall) and Tom Stephens (Truro) led out the foursomes and we’re soon 3up, but Oscar Hein and Lee James slowly pegged them back and the match went up the 18th with Dorset securing the narrowest of wins 1up. Sam Crocker (Carlyon Bay) and Billy Downing (Truro) battled hard to force a half.
Captain Adam Bridgewater brought in debutant Ollie James from Launceston after his fine showing at the recent County Championships and partnered him with Amateur finalist Max Gay (Carlyon Bay) and the pair played steadily with Ollie holing from 4 feet on the 17th to register his first point for the Duchy. In the fourth game Ethan Tempest (West Cornwall) and John Hancock (Newquay) again went to the 18th, Dorset chipped in!!!! But this Cornish side is made of strong stuff and Tempest rolled in a 15 footer for the win.
Match five also went to the 18th and provided another half point for the team for Jamie Greet (Mullion) and George Law (Perranporth) and at the end of all that Cornwall led 3-2 away from home.
In the singles Cornwall started slowly with Richards, Stephens, Tempest and James all losing, Law steadied the ship with a win followed by Greet and Downing.
Crocker then won his match to put Cornwall 7-6 up with two matches left on the course, but Dorset again rallied and Hancock lost on the last hole whilst Gay succumbed on the 17th green.
A fantastic match that either team could have won, and Cornwall should take heart for a tremendous fight back against a very strong Dorset side.
A chance for revenge is not far away as Cornwall play Dorset in the first match at SW Week in 3 weeks time.
Many thanks team you did the county proud One and All!
