Having laid solid foundations with a morning foursomes whitewash, the Cornwall U16 Boys delivered a solid 8-4 away win today at Yelverton. In their first match of the 2025 season they took on host county Devon in a Ben Enoch Trophy match.

[U16 Manager Steve Chapman reports] - Cornwall under 16s played their first game of the season in the Ben Enoch Trophy against Devon on Monday at Yelverton. We arrived for a practice round the day before as a lot of the boys had never played there. The course was in stunning condition and the sun was shining and we were looking to get off to a fast start at the beginning of the season.

As a lot of the boys have moved up to Under 16s this year it's the first time a lot we're playing 36 as the format is 18 holes foursomes and 18 holes singles. We were out of the gates fast early on with our first pairing of Alfie Chapman and Harrison Gurd up all the way and running out 4/2 winners. Next up was the St Enodoc pair of Bobby Godfrey and Harry Jolliff who again were up all the way winning 3/1. Out in the final 2 games were Luke O'Hanlon playing his first game for Cornwall and Sam Hanton again winning convincingly 5/3. Finishing off a perfect morning Ryan Tozer and Kennane Burt also won 4/3 making it a clean sweep and heading into lunch 4-0 to the good.

Heading into the singles needing only 2.5 points to win the match again we were off to a good start. Leading the charge was Alfie Chapman and playing some good golf he managed to win his game 3/2. Sam Hanton was well up in the 6th game as was Ryan Tozer in the 8th, each winning 6/5 and 7/6 respectively which was enough to get the job done. Harry Joliff also won the 4th match 4/3 .

Other games were closer but Cornwall got the wins they needed and got off to a great start in the league with the final score 8-4 to Cornwall.

Our next game is in July away to Dorset followed by a home fixture against Somerset at St Enodoc in August. I would like to thank Yelverton Golf Club for their hospitality. The food was great and the course was a great test for the boys and really loved playing there. It was great to see Adam Frayne the PGA Professional at Yelverton and catch up and talk about memories of when he represented Cornwall and England at junior level. It was great for the boys to meet him and aspire to achieve what he did when he played for Cornwall winning the South West Boys under 18s at 14 years of ageā€¦ Some feat that.
