Cornwall Win Season Opener Against Royal Navy

Cornwall's Jon Hancock in full flow at Perranporth

Cornwall hosted the Royal Navy at Perranporth GC today in blustery cold conditions and came out with a season opening win

in this annual friendly but competitive match

Matt Richards (West Cornwall) and the returning Jon Hancock (Newquay) set the pace with a 3/1 victory, shortly followed by Sam Crocker  (Carlyon Bay) and Ethan Tempest  (West Cornwall) with a 3/2 win.

A welcome return to County golf by Billy Downing (Truro) and his partner Jack Kevern (West Cornwall) produced a 4/2 win and with Jamie Greet and Kyle Fraser (both Mullion) easing to a 6/5 win a whitewash in the foursomes looked on the cards, but Alex Hinds (Tehidy Park) a Cornwall Player representing the Navy and Ryan Moore fought back from two down with two to play for a half and a morning result of 4.5 - 0.5.

You just can't keep the smile off Jamie Greet's face!

Captain Adam Bridgewater took the decision to elevate his younger players up the order in the afternoon to give them valuable experience for the season ahead, but it was the experienced Hancock that shone the brightest.

Richards in game one secured a half and ‘Hanks’ registered a 7/5 win, Kevern added another win 4/2 before a game Fraser went down fighting 3/2.

Cornwall's middle order of Crocker, Downing and Greet all added wins before Joe Ibbs-George who played well lost 3/2.

Tempest was always in control of his match 3/2 and local James Ruddick closed out a 3/1 win to give the Duchy an impressive overall 12 - 3 win.

Many thanks to the Royal Navy team for their team spirit and never say die attitude, and a special thanks again to Perranporth for their hospitality.
