Falmouth Claim First Presidents Trophy Win For Club

Presidents Trophy Winners 2025 - Falmouth

The Falmouth GC Men’s team won the 2025 President’s Trophy Final for the first time 2025 President’s Trophy Champions after beating a plucky St Austell side on a windy and cold day at St Enodoc GC last Sunday.

With the course presented in great condition the two teams faced a stern test in the windy and cold conditions and as so often the case the scoreline does not tell the full story. Every game went at least as far as the 15th green with two making it to the 17th and one tied on 18.

Falmouth got off to a good start as their top two singles players Rob Oliver and Darren Horton both scored 3&2 wins over David Lobb and Colin Langley respectively. For St Austell Matt Dearing then claimed a 2&1 win over Stephen Thomas before Andy Morris stretched Falmouth’s advantage with a 2 hole win over Simon Austin-Rattenbury.

Back came St Austell again with a 3&1 win for Daniel Burr over Grant Nicholls and this saw them 3-2 down in the overall match.

Thereafter the tide turned in Falmouth’s favour as they rattled off 3 wins which put them out of reach. Mike Elliott beat Ashley Sutton (4&2), Crispin Merritt beat Aiden Reek (3&2) and Will Sercombe beat Darren Wisdom (4&3).

In the final game left on the course there was a ding dong encounter between Falmouth’s James Dempsey and St Austell’s Chris Bailey and this one went all the way and the two could not be separated in their tied match. The final score Falmouth 6.5 - 2.5 St Austell.

(L to R) CGU President Martin Edwards, Falmouth Team Captain Phil Jones, and St Enodoc Club Captain Caroline Hume-Kendall

A packed clubhouse was welcomed by St Enodoc Club Captain Caroline Hume-Kendall before CGU President Martin Edwards thanked St Enodoc for their first-class hospitality and support. For St Austell Captain Brian Osborne congratulated Falmouth on their win and thanked his team for their efforts across the season. For Falmouth Team Captain Phil Jones was a very happy man in claiming the President’s Trophy for the first time. He complimented St Austell on the sporting manner in which all of the games had been played before thanking his team for their winter season long efforts. Jones thanked the CGU for the work undertaken to ensure the knockout season could be completed despite the challenges thrown by often adverse weather. Jones also expressed best wishes to Alan Creber (Launceston) for an upcoming operation.

Hume-Kendall and Edwards then presented prizes to both teams before all dined together.
