Cornwall Golf - Volunteer of the year 2024/2025

CGU President Martin Edwards - Mick Fox Falmouth GC - Richard Bunch Development Officer

Mick Fox from Falmouth Golf Club has become the first recipient of the  Cornwall Golf volunteer of the year award.

Development Officer Richard Bunch wanted to ensure the volunteers who do so much work within our clubs and facilities have the opportunity to be recognised. Richard said " We have been working very hard to get clubs to engage in our development work. Without volunteers such as Mick this would be impossible. Volunteers are integral to our sport and should be recognised for their hard work and commitment."

Richard nominated Mick this year who qualified as one of our first Community Golf Instructors in March 2024. Since then Mick took his new skills and with his already lengthy experience in Junior Golf worked really hard to achieve some truly amazing results. Some of his achievements are listed below.

Qualified as a Community Golf Instructor in March 2024

Ran four “Get into Golf” five-week course’s in 2024,  with 10 participants on each course. (50 new golfers)

Twenty-two went on to the Golf Access programme playing each Sunday.

To ensure these new golfers were comfortable in their new environment their own one-hour tee slot was arranged at the club. This gave new golfers the opportunity not to feel rushed or pressured.

Seven of the group were girls who are all still playing.

Nine of the group are currently working towards attaining their WHS handicaps.

Nine of the group are taking private one to one lesson with the Asst Professional Rob MacGregor on a weekly basis.

He then organised Falmouth Golf Club junior open day, where any child from the area could come along and try putting, chipping, and hit shots in the nets.

Thirty-eight attended all receiving a goodie bag.

In addition to this he organised a Golf Access Day where golfers from Mullion, Tehidy, Carlyon Bay and Budock Vean.

At Christmas he went on to run a junior Turkey Trot. Fifty-eight people played including Mum’s, Dad’s and Grandparents. One hundred and two sat down for Christmas Dinner.

Each tee was sponsored. A raffle held together with an auction raising a total of £1290.00 for the junior section.

Five parents have now joined the club and enjoying playing golf with their children.

Outside of this he runs an after-school club at Mawnan Smith Primary School, where juniors will be joining his next weekend courses at his home club.

Mick was presented with his award by CGU President Martin Edwards at last evenings AGM (Thursday 27th March 2025). He made a short acceptance speech where he proudly announced that he was taking 12 Falmouth Juniors to Portugal in early 2026 to play at Pinhal, Millenium and Laguna. This was all following a conversation he had last year with the Junior Organiser at Pinhal Golf.

Richard went on to say " I took responsibility this year to bring about this award and nominate the first recipient. Next year we will be inviting clubs and facilities in January 2026 to nominate volunteers from their workforce for the 2025/2026 Volunteer of the year. I hope this will be an ongoing process long into the future."
