U18 Boys Draw with Seniors at Newquay

The CGU Seniors and U18 Boys teams fought out a 3 - 3 draw in their Half Term season opening match at a cold and windy Newquay GC on Monday this week.

[U18s Manager Mark Wallwork reports]

Firstly we would like to thank Cornwall Golf Union and Newquay Golf Club for hosting the event. They looked after both the teams with great hospitality providing the venue, post-match pasties and beverages on the day. We would also like to thank Warwick Holland County Seniors Captain and the players. Both teams seem to have a friendly but competitive game together.

The course was in top condition and playing well despite a challenging westerly wind of around 30mph with a very cold chill factor. Both teams battled the elements and fought out a close battle. The format was fourball better ball scratch match play.

The Junior Boys team at Newquay - with most wrapped up against the cold except for a hardy Dingle!

At the start of the match all the boys teed off well and without issue. Catching up with them on the 7th Tommy Miller and Heath Coombes were 2 down, Harry Willmott and Tiernan Wallwork 1 down, Fred Kirkland and Archie Haynes A/S,  Bobby Godfrey and Harry Jolliff 2 up, Harrison Gurd and Leon Brooks A/S, and the back group Kian Williams and Jay Dingle were 1 up.

Moving round to the 12 green the match was still all to play for with Tommy and Heath 3 down, Harry and Tiernan 1 down, Archie and Fred A/S, Harry and Bobby playing convincingly and leading their match 4 up, Harrison and Leon dropping a point and going 1 down, Kian and Jay dropping 2 points also going 1 down.

But come the end the Newquay duo of Tommy and Heath were comfortably beaten by Steve Barns and 'Chuck' Norris (5&4). The Seniors claimed the next match as well with Andy Rowe and Gary Wignall seeing off Harry & Tiernan 2&1. Then came a run of three wins for the boys, Fred & Archie beat Simon Knowles and Mark Johnson by just the one hole, the St Enodoc pairing of Bobby & Harry beat their clubmate seniors Richard Emery & Richard Jones 4&3 and the Perranporth pairing of Harrison & Leon beat Andrew Clotworthy & Richard Bunch by the one hole. It was then left to Malcolm Edmunds and Holland  to square the overall match as they beat Kian & Jay 2&1.

Looking at the statistics between the teams the seniors sported a 564 year advantage over the Juniors and a 30.1 handicap difference but the juniors managed to hold the seniors to a 3 all draw. The best part of the experience for our Cornwall juniors was to witness the experience and expertise of the seniors with their course management and club selection which will hopefully influence the junior game moving forward.
