Eight golfers, some with direct links to Cornwall, are preparing to tee off on an incredible journey next year to raise vital funds for Prostate Cymru.
On Thursday June 19th 2025, almost the longest day of the year, Prostate Cymru Chairman, Andy Thomas, and Fundraiser of The Year 2023, Ian Booth, together with six other friends and sponsors, will take on a 24-hour golf channel challenge, aiming to inspire others while supporting a cause that has been central to their lives. Ian is a golfer in Glamorgan and has represented the county at Men's and Senior levels in matches against Cornwall. Over and above this he works for Graham Ruth, one of our county's own sponsors Bonjour Golf and Graham will be one of those participating. Hence we would urge anyone able to support the cause to do so.
The challenge begins in Cornwall at our very own China Fleet Golf Club at 4:30 am, with the team hitting their first shots under the break of dawn. From there, they will travel across eight counties and eight courses, playing nine holes at each location, before finally concluding at the iconic Pyle and Kenfig Golf Club, where Ian is a Past Captain.
For both Ian and Andy, the 24-hour golf challenge is more than just a sporting feat—it’s a deeply personal mission.
Ian began his relationship with Prostate Cymru during his tenure as Pyle & Kenfig’s Centenary Club Captain after going to his doctors for “something totally unrelated”, his GP suggested a PSA test which tests the levels of prostate-specific antigen, and it came as a shock when his GP called back to explain he wasn’t happy with the results: “They came back to confirm that it was cancer and it was a massive shock because Ian had no symptoms at all.
As Ian and Andy prepare to take on this mammoth task, they hope others will join them—whether by donating, cheering them on, or raising awareness about the importance of prostate health.
The 24-hour golf challenge is more than just a test of endurance, every swing is an opportunity to raise awareness and funds for Prostate Cymru’s vital work, so every donation and share is massively appreciated.
Ian says "Sadly, In 2025 another 55,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in the UK and by 2035 the figure is expected to be 84,000. So please help me make more men aware of prostate cancer – so that we can catch the disease early, when it’s not causing symptoms and is potentially very curable in this challenge inspired by my involvement with the Channel League"
He continues "My Consultant Urologist and the founder Chairman of Prostate Cymru, Mr Andy Thomas, myself and 6 other golfers have accepted the tough challenge of playing 9 holes on every course within 24 hours. We will start at China Fleet in Cornwall as dawn breaks, working our way back to Glamorgan, where we think we can finish just before darkness sets in at Pyle & Kenfig. Each of the courses have been fantastic in their co-operation and we are all set to go."
The challenge is subject of a Just Giving page which can be found here
Over the coming 6 months, there will be regular social media updates of the event., which will also see filming of preparations and the actual event with the help of Dan Hendriksen and huis increasingly popular YouTube Channel. A unique scorecard for the event will be produced and this will include details of all eight courses, counties, and sponsors, available as a hard copy and in e-format.
