The Truro GC four man team of Simon Bray, Martin Rowe, Steve Paice and Jeff Cowls were the toast of Perranporth last night as they claimed victory in the CGU Club Team event staged over the cliff top links yesterday afternoon with a team total of 85 points.
When host club Manager Nathan Gilpin and CGU Secretary Chris Pountney got together in early 2024 to plan for the event, little did they know how successful it would be on a number of fronts. First they wished for a dry day - tick! Next as many clubs from across the county represented - tick!. All holes occupied for a shotgun start - tick! A meal for all those participating - tick! An informal presentation from the CGU on relevant matters - tick!
Despite a couple of brief showers the 72 combatants,16 club teams and two more from the County Ladies and the Men's Union, were treated to generally sunny warm conditions and a course in splendid condition thanks to the work of Course Manager Rob Cook and his team. The format was two scores to count Stableford.
And the winning Truro team took full advantage as they amassed their 85 point haul, as Bray later said ' dovetailing brilliantly''. Their reward pocking up the Foster Mitchell trophies and a £40 voucher for each member.
Second place went to the team from S Enodoc (Caroline Hume-Kendall, George Tunbridge, Neil & Lewis Bradley) with 83 points (£30 voucher each) and they pipped third placed Bowood Park on countback, the latter represented by Max Stockwell, Stephen Smith, Ian Ross and Dave Adey.(£20 voucher each)
There was also a special hole-in-one moment for Trethorne's Nigel Hunter as he aced the par 3 6th hole, as a result of which he ensured those with a taste for a good port were entertained - thank you Paul and well done!
As everyone converged on the clubhouse a hot meal for all went down very well before the assembled were briefly addressed by various speakers. Up first was Carole Waights Chair of the CLCGA/CGU Unification Committee. Carole provided an insight into discussions which have been taking place with the intention of Association and Union becoming a unified body in early 2026 as well as relevant considerations, legal and administrative. CGU Treasurer David West provided an update on the state of the CGU finances, stressing how keen we are to utilise the resources we hold for the benefit of all. A formal finance report will be provided to the November General Meeting. CGU Development Officer Richard Bunch gave details of the many advances he has been making in introducing golf to both schools and other parties across the county. In closing the CGU Secretary made a number of announcements including the upcoming County Dinner (22nd November Lanhydrock Hotel & GC), the Winter Knockout programme, County Cards, the 2025 County Week (Trevose 27th April - 3rd May), consideration to creating additional Seniors competitions, the changes published by England Golf for Adverse/Extreme Weather Conditions, the sum raised by the Lord Lieutenants competition and passed to the Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust (£1300) and lastly an appeal to anyone interested in becoming a qualified referee to make contact with him.
CGU President Martin Edwards congratulated County Seniors Captain Warwick Holland and his team on becoming the English Seniors Mens County Champions at Torquay the previous week, a first for the county and a first for the SW Region. This success was applauded by all those present. Edwards thanked Perranporth GC for their first class hospitality and praised the work of the greenkeeping team, before presenting the prizes.
