Cornwall U14s have been in action a long way from home at Erlestoke GC, playing the host county Wiltshire in the U14 Jack Roberts League. And they came away with a magnificent 7.5 - 4.5 win. The team (led on the day by Harrison Gurd, Perranporth) got themselves a 3 - 1 advantage after the morning foursomes and then in the afternoon's 8 singles claimed 3 outright wins and three halves.

[Team manager Steve Chapman reports]

Cornwall Under 14s played their second match of the season in the Jack Roberts League at the weekend against Wiltshire at Erlestoke Park. The course was presented in lovely condition and has recently undergone some changes but after a practice round the day before the boys were ready for the challenge against a strong Wiltshire side. The weather was lovely throughout the day and perfect golfing conditions.

With 9 holes played in the morning foursomes, Cornwall got off to a flier and at one stage up in all four matches with the first match out St Enodoc pair of Alfie Chapman and Bobby Godfrey raced into an early 3 hole lead. But after 8 holes it was back to all square and with a bogey on the last Cornwall lost 1 down against the strong pairing of Riley Banks and Charlie O Dowd. Cornwall responded immediately in the second game with Harry Gurd and Harry Joliff taking the last hole and winning 1 up. Cornwall also took the third match 2/1 with Harry Faull and Ethan Kinski combining very well and also taking the last game by the same margin from Rory Hudson and deputant Oliver Lawrence Cornwall went into lunch 3-1 up.

After lunch Cornwall were in pole position to get their first win for a few years but needed a strong afternoon performance. Leading out Cornwall was Alfie Chapman who once again played Riley Banks, With Riley up early Alfie pulled it back to be 2 up with 2 to play but a bogey, bogey finish allowed Wiltshire to gain a half point but a great start. Bobby Godfrey played against the in form Jack Mawer and after some great golf Bobby won 2/1 . With other matches on the course up it was looking promising. Two halved matches followed from Harry Gurd and Harry Faull and a great 7/6 win from Harry Jolliff was the 3.5 points needed for our first win. Cornwall was not done yet with Ethan Kinski producing some great golf to win 4/3 . Oliver Lawrence who had a great debut lost 4/3 but gained some valuable experience. Rory Hudson was the last game on the course and came down the last all square only for his opponent to hole a 30ft putt to take the match 1 up.

Cornwall ran out 7.5 - 4.5 winners and our first win for a few years was done against a Wiltshire side that have not lost for 4 years. A fantastic performance by all the boys who all contributed to the points tally. So many individual performances were on show and proud of where this young squad has come over the last 12 months and the hard work that's been put in over the winter months. Cornwall's next match is at St Enodoc on the 25th July against Dorset where we will be looking to follow up on this great win. A massive thanks to Erlestoke Park Golf Club for their hospitality over the course of the weekend and look forward to the rest of the season where we look to build on this win.

Footnote: The County Secretary received a telephone call from the Welfare Officer at Erlestoke GC. She spoke of how impressed she had been with the Cornwall U14s Team. They were very well behaved and should be viewed as a great credit to the Cornwall Golf Union. Such telephone calls are so nice to receive - so well done to the U14 Boys!
