Truro - Over 55s Team Championship Winners 2024
(L to R) Andy Beazley, Mark Stevenson, Graham Cowls, CGU President Martin Edwards,
Team Captain Dave Ealing, David Kneebone, Steve Paice & Peter Simmons

Truro's team of Over 55s were victorious yesterday in the CGU Over 55s Team Championship held at the winners club ...... but only just, as they pipped the Penwith peninsula duo of West and Cape Cornwall in a tight finish. Truro finished with a team aggregate nett total of 183 (-18) whilst West Cornwall finished ahead of Cape by virtue of countback with both on a 184 nett total.

The over 55s Team Championship is open to all clubs and this year 26 entered teams of 6 (3 pairs) into the event which sees competitors play a betterball medal off handicap with the team's 3 scores forming  the nett total. The tournament is in its 9th year and the winners receive an antique trophy presented by Past CGU President Glyn Rowett.

First pair out for Truro were stalwarts Andy Beazley and David Kneebone who returned a nett 61 with 6 nett birdies to which were added 12 nett pars. The second Truro pairing of Club Manager Peter Simmons and Steve Paice went one better (nett 60) with 8 birdies included in their haul. When third pair Graham Cowls and Mark Stevenson returned a nett 62 the clubhouse target was set at the 183 aggregate  total.

Cape Cornwall returned their scores about an hour and half later and set the Truro pulses racing as their three pairings recorded nett totals of 59, (Malcolm Brown & Kim Saunders including 10 nett birdies), 61 (Martin Uren & Terry Dodd) and 64 (Brian Polglase & Alan Cragg). On a different day this could easily have been a winning score.

Cape remained in second place through most of the day until they were caught by their near neighbours West Cornwall who matched the 184 total with scores of 63 (Anthony Dickinson & Jeff Deakin), 64 (Andy Boon & David Bowden) and an outstanding 57 from Chris Maw and Edward Rowe. The latter pair had 6 nett birdies but importantly two nett eagles and their reward was to be runners up in the best pair of the day element. West Cornwall finished second on countback.

Maw and Rowe were pipped to top dog spot by another 57 from the Bude pairing of Lee Mears and Mike Hudson who registered 9 nett birdies and one eagle in their impressive total, which included

Truro GC Vice Captain Andy Watson welcomed those present to the prize presentation saying how honoured the club were to stage this prestigious competition. He praised the club staff and course manager who had  both played a huge part in making the day so successful and he hoped the CGU would continue to favour the club as a host venue. CGU President Martin Edwards thanked Truro for their hospitality and spoke of the clubs popularity in its central location. He expressed the view there was no doubt the CGU would be returning and went on to present the prizes to a Truro team both relived and delighted in equal measure. For Truro team Captain Dave Ealing accepted the trophy from Edwards.
