Perranporth - Presidents Trophy Winners 2024
(L to R: Ian Berridge, Rob Hall, Andrew Barton, Mike Escott, Dave Bougen, Peter Foxwell, Roy Sargeant, Leon Brooks,
Steve Nelson, James Cannicott, CGU President Martin Edwards, Finely Robinson, Chris Dennis and Rob Cook)

Perranporth claimed their third win in a row at yesterdays much delayed winter knockout final as they defeated a plucky Truro side 6.5 - 2.5 at Bowood Park Golf Club.

With the semi finals having been delayed during what was a poor winter, then played at different times and not able to take up the scheduled final date, the match had been put off to a date which suited both sides, enabling them both to field the players they wanted. Despite being a June date the weather played its part with some heavy showers, a stiff breeze, and unseasonably cold temperatures making for difficult playing conditions on a course in very good condition.

Two of the first three games on the course went the distance, one in favour of Perranporth and one for Truro. For Perran Dave Bougen in game 1 beat Jordan Mayne 2&1 before Chris Dennis in game 2 for Perran lost out to Martin Cookman at the 18th. In game 3 Rob Hall for Perran then put his club in front with a 1 up win over Bradley Page.

These were followed, in games 4 & 5, by convincing Perran wins for Andrew Barton over Rob Gurnett (4&3) and for Leon Brooks (6&4) over Eric Owens. When Perran’s Course Manager Rob Cook won his game 9 match convincingly against Martin Rowe (6&4) Perranporth had their third consecutive Presidents Trophy win.

In game 6, Mike Escott for Perran won 2 up against James Davies. For Truro Simon Bray in game 8 beat James Cannicott (4&2) and in game 7 Ian Berridge (Perranporth) and Dean Harris (Truro) agreed an honourable half.

CGU President Martin Edwards welcomed everyone to the Winter Knockout presentation - in June - and speaking as a Perranporth member said how proud, even emotional, he was at the club's ongoing success. On behalf of the two teams, he thanked Bowood Park for staging the final on a course which had been in great condition. On behalf of Truro their 2023 Club Captain Peter Brooks thanked and praised his team for getting to the final and congratulated Perranporth on their win. For Perranporth their 2023 Captain Peter Foxwell said he was delighted to see the club team win. He said the final had been well fought and complimented Truro on their sportsmanship throughout.

Edwards presented prizes to both teams before presenting the President’s Trophy to the Perranporth team Captain Roy Sargeant.
