Mixed Fortunes forJuniors around the Region

It's already been a busy time for junior competition across our region and there have been some very good performances (and some not quite so successful) from Cornwall's junior golfers.

At the recent Cornwall Schools Team Championship (8th May) the three man team representing Bodmin College comprised Matthew Warren, Alfie Chapman, and Harry Jolliff. Their combined performance gains them a trip to Woodhall Spa in July for the national finals. Warren led the team scores with 40 points and Chapman followed up with 38 to build a strong platform to which Jolliff added a 33 point haul. Individual winner on the day was Archie Ridgwell (Carlyon Bay) with 45 points. Second was Yves Armstrong-Donaldson (West Cornwall) on 42 with Warren third. In the gross equivalent Tiernan Wallwork (Tehidy Park) was top with 32 gross points. Well done all!

Next the West of England U14s Championship was held over the weekend 25th/26th May at Mendip GC, Somerset. In a field of 44 juniors Alfie Chapman (St Enodoc) finished 6th in the nett event (13th in the gross) with rounds of 76 & 68. His second round was just the one shot behind the best of the day - a nett 67 from the winner Lily-Paige Littlewood. Another St Enodoc junior Bobby Godfrey returned nett rounds of 78 & 69 for a tied 14th spot - this total matched by Harrison Gurd (Perranporth) and Harry Faull (St Mellion). Best Cornish girl was Alex Simmons (Tehidy Park) with nett 73 & 77.

At last Tuesday's (28th May) Faldo Futures Regional Final held at Cumberwell Park GC, Wiltshire, West Cornwall's Rory Hudson finished 4th overall and in second place in his age group with a +3 score over the 9 holes. His reward is a place at the national finals at The Belfry in late August for the U12s category. Well done Rory! In the same event Ethan Kinski (St Mellion) returned a +4 score for 7th spot.

Also on Tuesday the English Golf Schools Association Regional Schools Championships took place at Forest Hills GC, Glos. With individual and team competitions combined the best Cornish performer was Oban Webber (St Mellion) who finished 12th in the boys 36 hole event with rounds of 80 & 81 for a +17 total. Boys individual winner was Jaxson Perry (Glos) on a +2 total after rounds of 75 & 71. In the team element Cornwall finished 4th on a total of 495 (+63) , 41 shots behind winners Dorset on 454.

In the girls equivalent the team of Charlotte Jenkin (West Cornwall), Mabel Gosling-Brown (Perranporth) and Isabelle Wakeling (Falmouth) finished in 6th spot (359), with Dorset also claiming the top spot here (313). Jenkin was the best of the Cornwall players with two rounds of 88.

Today (30th May) the Cornwall U16 and U14s are competing in the SWCGA Championship at Lansdown GC.
