Glamorgan Deliver Emphatic Win over Cornwall

Newquay Golf Club

[County Captain Charlie Philips reports]

Cornwall Golf Union hosted their second Channel League match of the 2022 season against Glamorgan at the award winning Newquay Golf Club. The course was presented in pristine condition and my thanks go to Dan Kendall and his staff who all came in to ‘set the course’ for the match. Excellent job. Weather conditions were very testing to say the least. 25-30 mph gusting winds, slick greens and a tournament set up tested the players to the max.

The match comprised of 5 foursomes in the morning and 10 singles in the afternoon.

Rob Macgregor and returning stalwart Richard Ackland - playing his first county match for 9 years - led Cornwall out but after a quality match the Glamorgan pair of Kieron Harman and Nick James slotted back to back birdies on 16 and 17 for a 2/1 win. The second match of Joe Reynard and Jon Hancock went down 18 but ended in Glamorgan's favour. Adam Bridgewater and Ethan Tempest gained a half point whilst Jamie Greet and Kieran Faulkner lost on 17. Dean Tulley and Tom Stephens played solid golf and did not give their opponents any opportunities as they eased to a 2-1 victory. So 3.5 to 1.5 down at lunchtime.

The wind was still blowing and intermittent showers made conditions difficult… in fact it was freezing watching….
Joe Reynard led out the singles and had a terrific battle against the impressive Kieron Harman. Joe lost on 17 but it was a cracker of a match.
Rob Macgregor had a ding dong battle with Nick James the result being a shared point.
Jamie Greet, Ethan Tempest, Kieran Faulkner and Dean Tulley all battled hard but were just not quite good enough on the day.
Tom Stephens reputation as a hard match player continued as he battled back to gain a deserved half point.

Wins came from two players returning to ‘active duty’ - Richard Ackland topped a great return winning the last two holes to edge out Sean David and Jon Hancock proved too hot to handle running out an impressive 3/2 win over Ian Flower.

Match Results Sheet

Although comprehensively beaten the matches were much closer than people think. It was a good effort on a brute of a day. Many thanks to our ball sponsors - Datson Consulting and to Newquay Golf Club members for allowing us to host the match.  Mr Adrian Toms ( Newquay Club Captain ) attended the closing ceremony and expressed how delighted the club were delighted to host the match.

The next Channel League match for Cornwall is away to Somerset on 30th July 2022.
