Cape Cornwall won the Frank Wills Salver on Sunday 15th March at Newquay Golf Club against Budock Vean.
In the 36 hole final, the weather started dry but after 9 holes the rain came in and produced some very testing conditions. After the morning 18 holes the match was extremely close with the scoreline at 2.5 each and all to play for in the afternoon round.
After lunch the rain stopped and the sun came out, but a stiff breeze kept the conditions challenging. It was Cape Cornwall that took control of the match during the second round, with the third match finishing first with the Cape Cornwall pairing of Ben Stevens and Dave Law winning 10 and 8 against the Budock Vean pair of Carl Templeton and Matt Julian.
The second match pairing for Cape Cornwall Rob Tredinnick and Rob Atkinson played steady golf to put the second point on the board for Cape Cornwall with a 6 and 4 win against Craig Kimpton and Kevin Watts of Budock Vean.
In the fifth match, Cape Cornwall's Terry Dodd and Martin Uren took hold of the match in the afternoon round beating Budock Vean's Tony Friday and Paul Davis by 6 and 5 and winning the Frank Wills Salver for Cape Cornwall.
Match 1 and Match 4 was very close and it was agreed that both matches would be halved as the overall team result was already determined.
Match 1 saw Richard Bunch and River Rojano from Cape Cornwall tied their match with Piran Trezise and Kevin Hawke of Budock Vean and Match 4 was a tied match between the Cape Cornwall pairing of Alan Cragg and Dan Ferris with Budock Vean's pair of Ian Hazzledine and John Bulley.
As this started off as a Cornwall Golf Union event before unification, Cornwall Golf Union President Martin Edwards welcomed the teams and presented both winners and runners up with tankards.
Cape Cornwall's Team Captain Rob Tredinnick congratulated his team and to Budock Vean on getting through to the final and wished the club well with the clean up from the damage caused by Storm Goretti in January.
Both clubs and Cornwall Golf would like to thank Newquay Golf Club for their excellent hospitality and support and for the great meals the teams enjoyed post match.
