Mens team start season with impressive win

Cornwall hosted the Royal Navy at Perranporth Golf Club on Saturday 14th March in this annual pre-season match.

Cornwall Men's Captain Adam Bridgewater selected a strong side that included a mixture of experienced players and young golfers. Cornwall welcomed debutant Jason Friend, who won the Cornwall U21's Championships last season.

                Jason Friend and Kieran Dixon

Cornwall got off to a flying start with winning all five of the foursomes with wins for George Law (Perranporth) and Jamie Greet (Mullion) 2 and 1, the St Enodoc pairing of Louis Archer and Brandon Armitage 2 Up, Sam Crocker (Carlyon Bay) and Tiernan Wallwork (Tehidy Park) 2 and 1, Jason Friend (China Fleet) and Kieron Dixon (St Mellion) 2 Up and the Truro partnership of Tom Stephens and Billy Downing 6 and 5.

Bridgewater mixed up the order in the singles with Wallwork going out first against Perranporth member Adam Taylor for the Navy and it was the home player that won the match by 6 and 4. There were then a strong series of results with 8 consecutive wins for Cornwall with wins for Crocker (3/2), Greet (2/1), Downing (6/4), Archer (2/1), Armitage (5/4), G Law (4/3), Dixon (2 Up) and Stephens (5/3). Jason Friends in his county debut had a close match with Falmouth's Chris Harris and ended the match 1 down.

This gave the Duchy an impressive overall 13 - 2 win and a very positive start to the 2026 season. The next fixture for the Cornwall Men's team is a practice weekend on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th March at the Isle of Purbeck.

Many thanks to the Royal Navy team for their team spirit and never say die attitude, and a special thanks again to Perranporth for their hospitality.
