There is a new Community Golf Instructor course organised in February and March 2026, to support the growth of junior and beginner golf.
There has been over 30 trained Community Golf Instructors in Cornwall over the last 2 years, and Cornwall Golf has funding to train another 10 CGI's on this upcoming course.
The CGI course consists of two online classes on Tuesday 17th February and Tuesday 24th February 2026 (both 7.30pm - 9pm) and an in person day at China Fleet Golf Club on Sunday 1st March 2026 from 9.30am - 5pm.
Cornwall Golf can pay the £135 for anyone who would like to take part in this course.
For more information or to book your place please contact the Cornwall Golf Performance and Development Manager Richard Bunch at development@cornwallgolf.org.uk.
MORE DETAILS ABOUT THE COMMUNITY GOLF INSTRUCTOR COURSE
England Golf and partners across Great Britain and Ireland have collaborated on the pioneering R&A-backed Community Golf Instructor Programme. The new training programme launched in 2024 is creating dedicated new workforce to help develop the game in communities across the British Isles.
Once trained, instructors are able to lead beginner and introductory activity independently, working in a paid or voluntary capacity, without it affecting their ‘amateur status’ as a golfer.
The cost to attend the course is £135 and the minimum age is 18 years old. The training course is a mix of online and face-to-face learning, focusing on developing Community Golf Instructors who take a person-centred approach and can create a relaxed, sociable environment for golf activity. Learners also receive a CGI Support Pack, digital resources, free mentor support (where required) and access to a peer community.
Instructors also need to have/obtain and England Golf DBS and attend a UK Coaching Safeguarding Course to complete the approval process – for which there is an additional cost.
It is not essential for you to have a background or existing knowledge in golf to undertake the course.
All we ask is that you are passionate about the benefits of sport and are willing to develop the skills to create a welcoming and inclusive environment and deliver fun, engaging games and activities.
Phil Anderton, Chief Development Officer at The R&A, said of the initiative:
“We are delighted to work with the Home Nation Associations, the Golf Foundation and the PGA on the introduction of this new programme which will build on the excellent work PGA members perform across Great Britain and Ireland. We need to attract more people of all ages and backgrounds from across different areas of society into golf in an accessible way. This initiative will develop a larger, more diverse workforce in Great Britain and Ireland that is able to work in local communities and as part of national programmes. In doing so, we will encourage more people into golf at all levels and help ensure the sport continues to thrive.”
Golf currently benefits from a PGA Coaching network, which continues to develop golfers from grass roots to the elite level across GB&I. The Community Golf Instructor programme complements the existing work of the PGA as well as building on the previously implemented Club Activator Course, by increasing access to beginner and introductory golf activity. All with the aim helping more people recognise the benefits of playing golf and becoming a golfer.
